Walk-Ins Welcome! Free Healthy Food Expo with Cooking Demonstrations and Presentations
 

 

When healthy food is also delicious food, we are more likely to eat it. That most-obvious and simple idea is also a powerful idea, and it lies at the heart of the Farms, Food & Health Expo—FREE, walk-ins welcome, and open to the public—this Friday, September 27, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Hagerty Center, Traverse City.

The free Expo is part of our four-day, national tier Farms, Food & Health Conference, with Culinary Medicine Training. Offering a mix of talks and cooking demonstrations, Expo day is designed to help you and yours live healthy (and flavorful!) lives by cooking delicious and doable local food recipes.

Below is a list of sessions—all are free and no tickets needed, just show up and enjoy! See you there!

Farms, Food & Health Expo

10:30–11:00 a.m. Cooking Demonstration Pumpkin: Mole Chili Chef Kaylee Davenport opened a business, Fuel Your Tomorrow, offering healthy chef-made dinners to customers. She opens our Expo showing how to make a delectable Pumpkin Mole Chili. 

11:15–11:30 a.m. Tapas Talk: Deanna Minnich, Ph.D., Internal Climate Change Author and health advocate Deana Minnich will touch upon the theme of her books and work, that internal bodily inflammation can be mitigated by eating the right foods. Stop by her book signing at 1 p.m.

11:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m.  Cooking Demonstration: Healthy and Delicious Chef Loghan shows how food that incorporates regenerative principles and a “food as medicine” approach can look, taste and inspire everyone. Yes, you can showcase health on the menu without sacrificing flavor. Loghan will also discuss the importance of sourcing and how that must dictate the future of food. Sponsored by Table Health.

12:30 p.m.–12:45p.m. Tapas Talk: Heart Disease to Heart Health: Replacing Statins with Culinary Medicine. Ed Gergosian describes his personal journey from from triple bypass surgery to healthy heart and healthy cholesterol levels managed by a whole-food, plant-based diet. And hear about what he discovered about himself along the way, for leading a more enjoyable and active live.

1:00 p.m.–1:30 p.m. Cooking Demonstration: MSU Extension The MSU team will highlight select fruit vegetable recipes they share at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market as part of the Prescription for Produce Program. The recipes feature many local ingredients and are often taste tested at the market. Prescriptions for Produce has been gaining momentum in partnership with Munson Healthcare.

1:45 p.m.–2 p.m. Tapas Talk: 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids & Farms Learn about a cutting edge state program that you could leverage for your community, and how health care providers, food pantries, gardeners, parents, and others can support schools and early child care providers to use it and be successful in engaging kids in eating healthy, locally grown food.

2:15 p.m.–2:45 p.m. Cooking Demonstration: Favorite Recipes from the Munson Menu. Chef Darren will offer tips and techniques for a perfectly seared salmon served with sautéed greens, sweet corn, and butter bean succotash dish. Heart-healthy and delish! Munson Healthcare is a proud sponsor of the culinary medicine track for 2019.

3:00 p.m.–3:15 p.m. Tapas Talk: Catching up With Grow Benzie. Tap into the insights and ideas of Grow Benzie’s executive director, who runs one of northern Michigan’s most innovative and dynamic local food–centric community centers. Josh is active on a number of leadership teams, pursuing a systems approach to food, education and health care. He will discuss what Grow Benzie has accomplished onsite and how that has translated to bigger work in the county, region, and state.

3:30 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Tapas Talk: Growing Together in Michigan. Sarah Eichberger discusses an MSU Extension Program piloted in 2019 that is a collaborative between MSU Extension, Master Gardeners and community nutrition instructors to provide more fresh produce, nutrition education, and public health interventions and gardening education to food pantries and other low income food service sites.

4:15 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Tapas Talk: Marshall Collins Coaching Athletes for Healthier Lifestyles Join Coach Marshall as he shares insights and motivation to encourage young people toward positive health and eating behaviors.
