Dear Governor Whitmer and Michigan legislators: We are writing with two messages:

  • ●  Thank you for restoring the funding for 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan's Kids & Farms in the 2020 School Aid Budget. This addressed a critical need for our schools and preserved the infrastructure for this important program.

  • ●  We urge you now to expand 10 Cents a Meal in the fiscal year 2021 School Aid Budget, Section 31j, so that it finally is available to schools statewide. It should be funded at $2 million in order to ensure that as many children as possible in Michigan reap the benefits of this matching grant program that supports schools in purchasing locally grown produce for children in school meals.

The COVID-19 crisis has made clear to all of us how critical schools are for feeding our children. This is true now more than ever in this time of financial and health hardships for families. One school food service director, for example, has been serving an average of 17,500 meals a week to students over the summer, compared to 2,000 a week in previous years. At the same time, Michigan’s farmers are facing major market losses, with the closures of farmers’ markets, restaurants, and more.

We understand that legislators and the governor face a daunting budget crisis and must make difficult decisions. For that reason, we must be innovative.

  • We must do these four things in the COVID-19 crisis, and 10 Cents a Meal does all four:

    1) Provide nutritious food for our children.
    2) Invest in Michigan’s hard-hit economy and farms.
    3) Strengthen Michigan’s essential infrastructure in local food supply chains—as we have seen national supplies falter.

    4) Leverage as many federal dollars to Michigan as possible. Schools rely on National School Lunch dollars as their match for state 10 Cents grants.

Schools face such dire funding shortfalls that they say they will only be able to afford canned fruit and vegetables rather than healthier fresh produce unless they have 10 Cents a Meal.

With 10 Cents a Meal, you will support farmers in crisis so that they will have additional markets; and you will ensure that the sky-rocketing number of children in need are well-nourished this school year and next summer during school summer meal programs.

Please expand funding for 10 Cents a Meal in the School Aid Budget, so that it: 1) Expands to at least $2 million for fiscal year 2021. 2) Is available statewide to ensure equitable access. 3) Also is available for sponsors of early child care centers.

We thank you for seeing the urgent need and value of this program by providing supplemental funding in the 2020 budget. Please come together now to make sure funding is extended to meet the priority needs of our children and farms all across Michigan in the 2021 budget.

  •
