A Place to Raise a Family: Shelli DiFranco’s Move to Traverse City
Shelli and Joey DiFranco got the ‘itch’ to move to Traverse City from Chicago after falling in love with the region’s natural beauty and a vibrant culinary scene. Shelli initially got a job with Hagerty Insurance, which allowed them to make the leap. They live outside town, in Leelanau County, with their son Renzo.
Area schools celebrate National Farm to School Month
Schools throughout northwest Lower Michigan are cooking up locally grown food for lunch this October as part of National Farm to School Month.
School Garden Week starts June 2
Schools in Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Benzie, and Antrim counties will celebrate the inaugural School Garden Week next month to draw attention to the diversity of school-based gardening projects in our region. From June 2 to June 6, the public is welcome to visit schools for “Garden Tour Days” to learn more about these projects, participate in fun garden activities, and meet the staff that helps run these programs.
Plugged In: Prop 3 Could Boost Community Renewables Projects
There’s a brand-new wind turbine spinning in Leelanau County. The sparkling white machine high on a hill near Northport may be Michigan’s first-ever “community renewable energy” project, and it offers a fresh spin on Proposal 3, which requires 25 percent renewables for Michigan by 2025.
