TRAVERSE CITY—Traverse Gourmet owners Norm and Cile Plumstead have pledged 1% of their business’s 2013 profits to the Michigan Land Use Institute.
The pledge was motivated by the “1% for the Planet” movement established in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. When the Plumsteads established Traverse Gourmet in 2011, part of their mission was to support and improve the region by supporting environmental organizations.
The Plumsteads selected MLUI because of its regional work centered in three program areas: Food & Farming, Clean Energy and Thriving Communities.
“We are so appreciative of this donation because it is a shining example of how business can thrive while adhering to environmentally-friendly principles,” said Hans Voss, MLUI Executive Director.
Traverse Gourmet, based in Empire, is an online merchant selling Michigan products with an emphasis on naturally produced, organic, and fair trade items. They also offer an extensive selection of Michigan Gourmet Gift Baskets.
